Helen Colijn was a 20-year-old Dutch woman living with her parents on a small island near Borneo when the Japanese invaded in 1941. Shipwrecked, she and her two younger sisters were captured by Japanese soldiers and shuffled from concentration camp to concentration camp for the duration of World War II. This book chronicles their personal travails and the horrible sufferings of the British and Dutch women with whom they were interned. Perhaps more significantly, it tells the remarkable story of Margaret Dryburgh, a Presbyterian missionary who gave her fellow prisoners a means to survive spiritually: the vocal orchestra. Working from memory, she reconstructed the "Largo" from Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, and works by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Ravel, and Grainger--and taught them to a chorus of prisoners. Even the often-brutal Japanese guards were moved by the concerts, Colijn reports. Although this book often glosses over the horrors, it is a moving account of some remarkable women and the music that sustained them.

Helen's story reached a mass audience via the motion picture Paradise Road, which is based on the events chronicled in Song Of Survival.

I too was a POW of the Japanese and as I read Helen's story, I had tears in my eyes for I could feel the things she and the others were going through. The sickness, starvation, no medical supplies and rain and mud, cold wet quarters and back breaking work from dawn to dusk; and for what? A cup of watery rice; and in the end death. It is a story of survival and the music helped the POWs. The music the two ladies were able to recreate, and the choir gave the prisoners a brief respite from the daily grind of their prison drudgery and misery, and the uncertainty of what could happen at any time at the hands of the unpredictable Japanese soldier. All he had to do was account for a body. And all that mattered to the camp commander was a body--dead or alive..

I am related to Helen Colijn and so glad she wrote this true story. The experiences that she, her sisters and parents, my folks, etc have passed onto us have been amazing. I am now 40 with 4 kids of my own. I retell this story that she wrote to help my kids, and myself, relate to the true meaning of life. I hope we can raise future generations to have the dignity and stamina to sing through both the prosperous, as well as the survival, times. (There is also a PBS documentary video (same title) and then a full movie called Paradise Road, by the same director of Driving Miss Daisy, based partly on this book.) Thanks Helen!

I bought this DVD for my daughters as a rebuttal for the endless BS at schools about how horrible it was for Japanese interned during WW2 by Rosenvelt .My grand father was actually on the same civilian boat MS Poelau Bras with the writer of the book, Helen Colijn when it was sunk by the Japanese (and yes, those airplanes did turn around and machine gunned those in the water, possibly he was one of them). He was not on that boat by choice --On gov. orders he had just blown up oil fields on Java/Tjepoe, denying the Japs the resources they needed and consequently he needed to get asap away from the angry Japs and Java. My grandmother had decided to stay behind with my mother and uncle and was interned for 3+ years in one of those Japanese trickle-die-from-starvation-or-illness camps. And it definitely did something to her, the hunger, since up to this day, she cannot throw away food and still hides food in the weirdest places.So after my daughters got inundated with how bad America was for Japanese interned, this movie and related book were very helpful putting reality in perspective and rebutting the self-hating nonsense they teach these days at schools.My only comment is that the movie is a bit glossy and reality for many was worse.

I read this book after seeing the movie "Paradise Road". Courage, perseverance, and caring for one another was the glue that helped internees to survive, though many died due to the brutal living conditions under Japanese incarceration. The woman who chose not to work, get out of bed, or spied for the Japanese to get extra cigarettes still received food rations and medical help from those woman who DID work. Makes me wonder if I could be so generous to another group of individuals who didn't pull their weight under awful conditions.

Stories of internment camps during WWII always remind us that the human spirit will not be killed, even though the body is put through privation and humiliation. Song of Survival tells of Helen Colijn's internment in South East Asia. She tells of valiant women who kept living on even as those around them became ill or died. One woman, Margaret Dryburgh, recalled from memory music from Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Chopin and others; she wrote down the music, including the harmonies, and then formed a choir of the women she called a vocal orchestra. So great was the effect of the music, it's beauty and the tranquility of the women singing it, that even the Japanese guards stopped to listen and were charmed. Such is the power of music. Years later the scores were found and given to Stanford University. From there, many women's choirs began singing these songs again. The story was made into a movie, Paradise Road. The movie and CD of the music can be found on line.

A story of how women from various countries were imprisoned by the Japanese in Indonesia for 3 1/2 years, and in spite of the horror, found a voice that through music hope can come from despair. "The Captive's Hymn", written by one of the women, is a "must read or hear". It's in the book, can also be found found online and the song can also be purchased via Amazon for MP3. It's worth every penny of the 99¢.

Since I was born during WWII I have always been interested in those stories. I especially like the stories of survival and that people could have a positive attitude throughout the ordeal. I very much enjoyed this book and am looking forward to watching the DVD movie made on the story, Paradise Road.
