denn für mich verdient das Buch keinen einzigen Stern und mehr als nur fünf davon. Es ist es faszinierend, beunruhigend, in mancher Hinsicht beängstigend prophetisch, in seinen Beschreibungen von Eis und Schneesturm hinreißend, abstoßend, unnötig blutrünstig, konfus, luzid, extrem, sein Ende unbefriedigend, das dem abgedroschenen Primitivschluss "es war ja alles nur ein Traum" peinlich ähnelt, und gleicherweise den Zusatz verdient "wie hätte er es denn sonst enden lassen können".
Fforde, who has worked in the film industry before turning to writing full-time, has the uncanny ability to produce intelligent page turners. They always read a bit as if they could easily be turned into a script, but as we are all very visual these days this hasn't posed a problem (for me at least). This novel's hero is an unlikely lad who has not achieved much before going North. Together with him the reader gets to know the harsh winters of this particular book world. Character and plot development are skillful and interesting. Once again a Fforde novel has made my waking hours exciting. I can only recommend this novel as a quirky, intelligent and very entertaining read!
What can I say. Once again Fforde was able to create a new world with its own laws and customs. Written with witt and a little bit tongue in cheek, we are immersed in a world where humans go into hibernation for 3 months and only a few are left to battle the winter.
Finally the hiatus of the author has ended and the result is a stand-alone novel about … well hibernation. In this world climate change works the other way round and it gets so cold in winter that those who can afford it go into hibernation, all organized by a ministry and protected by guards called consuls.All of this, the locations to hibernate, the drugs to ameliorate the sleep and so on are a big business and there are many outsiders and rouges out there in the cold. And something very odd is going on in sector 12 …Fans of the work of Jasper Fforde will appreciate this novel, similar in style to Shades of Grey, which blends a spy story with a bit of Lonely Mounty mystique. For novices I would rather recommend one of the Dragonslayer novels.
Drei Jahre habe ich auf dieses Buch gewartet und das hat sich echt gelohnt. Nach einem etwas schwierigen Start mit viel Technik und dem sich auf eine komplett neue Welt einlassen Müssen, präsentiert sich hier eine rasante Geschichte, welche doch auch in der Realität verankert, so fremd also nicht ist. Und das macht Jasper Fforde eben aus, auch wenn ihm die abstrusesten Ideen kommen, einen kleinen Bezug zur Realität gibt es immer. Ich habe viel gelacht und gestaunt und hoffe sehr, dass es nicht mehr 3 Jahre geht bis zu seinem nächsten Buch. Einfach der Wahnsinn.
Wieder wartet Jasper Fforde mit schier unendlichen Einfallsreichtum auf. Wieder erschafft er eine Welt, die ganz eigenen Gesetzen gehorcht. Wieder sind seine Figuren einzigartig. Es macht einfach Spaß, seine Bücher zu lesen.Allerdings braucht dieses Buch recht lange, um richtig in Fahrt zu kommen. Aber durchhalten lohnt sich. (Ich fand es fast so gut wie Shades of Grey.)Richtig genial ist das Hörbuch. Eigentlich wollte ich nur ausprobieren, wie das mit der Synchronisation von Buch und Hörbuch in der App funktioniert. Es funktioniert perfekt und ist schlicht genial. Und das Hörbuch, gelesen von Thomas Hunt, ist ganz große klasse. Respekt!
I can't say how much I enjoyed Early Riser. It's an intelligent, new take on the Western genre, set in ice-bound Wales, of all places. Nobody but Fforde could have pulled this off.
